When your child first visits us, it is a great opportunity to show how fun and important it is to maintain their oral health. When kids are both engaged and excited in the care of their teeth and mouth, they will obtain better oral health outcomes, which is what we are all striving for.
Here are three benefits of pediatric dental cleanings:
The first dental visit for a child who is two-years-old or under helps set the tone for the rest of their lives. This visit helps establish the dental office as a trusted location where their dental needs will be met in a comfortable, safe environment. This initial visit allows us to establish a baseline of oral health to see if there is any deviation in the future that could indicate potential problems.
This first visit also helps to educate you as a parent on the best ways to prevent tooth decay. Children of this age can find it quite difficult to regularly maintain clean teeth. Our dental team is trained to help them settle into a daily routine. They are also skilled at putting nervous children at ease, and you are invited to join your child during their appointments.
During your child's first visit, the hygienist will be examining and cleaning your child's teeth. They may also educate you on the best ways to clean your baby's teeth, as well as go over dietary and fluoride requirements. Your hygienist may also recommend specific oral care products that are safe and gentle for your child.
The next part of the process is when the dentist joins you and your baby. They will closely examine your baby's mouth to detect any signs of tooth decay. They will discuss any potential signs of problems with your baby's oral development. This is a good time to share any concerns that you have regarding your baby's oral development and teeth.
The first visit will wrap up when we provide some items for your baby, like a toddler-sized toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.
If your child is three-years-old or older, we will escort them to a treatment chair where they can relax during their checkup. Their hygienist will clean their teeth, including flossing and the application of fluoride.
After your child's teeth have been cleaned, our dentist will conduct a thorough examination of their mouth and teeth. They will advise that they follow a routine for future dental visits that can occur at periodic intervals, based upon their unique cavity-risk level. After the completion of your child's visit, he or she will be provided with a patient bag containing a small toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss.

“I was sure I just needed a filling, but when I saw that my filling had almost completely fallen away with the wand that showed my smile on the monitor, it was obvious I would need a crown or face losing the whole tooth. I was able to get a special price on the crown which made things easier for me personally. I am glad for the help and thank Dentalville for working with me and providing great service and care. Will be back”
